Today was the annual occasion when I got to join a class for first-year students at Hiroshima University. Professor Werner teaches students who have no experience in Aikido, including international students studying in Japan, and introduces them to what Aikido is through his lessons.
I wonder if this is the fourth year I have had the opportunity to participate. His lectures are different every year, and I always discover something new. At the same time, I hope that I can use my experience so far to help reinforce what he is trying to communicate to the students. It is also a way for me to check how well I understand Aikido myself.
Since Professor Werner will be returning to Germany, this will be his last lecture. It is certainly sad. But I won’t dwell on it. That is what practice is for.
Playful practice
- Warm-up exercises
- Getting familiar with the jo
- The 25 jo kata
Regular practice
- Aiki exercises
- Footwork
- Ai-hanmi katate-dori sankyo stretching
- Shomen-uchi irimi-nage
- Kata-dori ikkyo omote
- Kata-dori men-uchi shiho-nage
- Gyaku-hanmi katate-dori kokyu-nage
- Multiple attackers: kokyu-nage
As I expected, I found myself carrying over the flow of the previous practice session. I want to separate each session from the one before it as much as possible and focus on the people who are actually there that day. But this time, my mind seems to have become rather confused.
That confusion is not necessarily a bad thing. Perhaps it is through this very confusion that I will grow. I believe that, once I work through it, my brain will gradually organize my understanding of Aikido again.
For tonight, I will rest.
Tomorrow, practice begins again.
