My father and I often talk about world affairs. Sometimes those conversations even turn into heated debates. Ours is probably a somewhat unusual family.

My father, now retired and with time on his hands, keeps a close eye on world events in front of the television and gathers his information that way. His is the television generation. He grew up in an era when black-and-white televisions first appeared and then became color televisions, and he has told me about going to wealthier friends’ houses just to watch TV.

As for me, I grew up when personal computers began to spread, when each person came to have one, then into the age of smartphones we carry everywhere. Even that alone is hard enough to keep up with, and now, over the past few years, the evolution of AI has brought us into an era where convincing falsehoods can be created with ease.

We live in a time when what seems self-evident today may no longer be so tomorrow. It makes me realize how profoundly different the world can look depending on the person.

Children’s Practice

  1. Warm-up exercises
  2. Bear walk and spider walk
  3. Ai-hanmi katate-dori irimi-nage (guided with the jo)

Regular Practice

  1. Aiki warm-up exercises
  2. Footwork
  3. Ai-hanmi katate-dori irimi-nage (entering movement only, using the jo)
  4. Ai-hanmi katate-dori irimi-nage (entering and turning movement, using the jo)
  5. Gyaku-hanmi katate-dori irimi-nage stretch
  6. Gyaku-hanmi katate-dori shiho-nage
  7. Gyaku-hanmi katate-dori nikyo omote
  8. Gyaku-hanmi katate-dori irimi-nage
  9. Gyaku-hanmi katate-dori sankyo ura

We revisited gyaku-hanmi katate-dori for the first time in a while, but because these are techniques we practiced extensively at 4th kyu, I was surprised by how quickly everyone understood them.

When preparing for examinations, it is easy to keep returning to the same techniques, and I feel the focus can become too narrow, too close. It is important to view technique through a wider lens — through Aikido itself, through ki, through a more distant focus.

Sometimes the longer path is the quicker way.

Let us practice patiently.
