At work, I sometimes help patients take a bath.

I enjoy being assigned to bathing assistance. Nursing is not always easy. The things we do are not necessarily pleasant for patients. Bathing, however, is often different. Of course, some patients dislike baths, but more often than not, people are happy to be able to bathe.

When illness or injury strikes, something as ordinary as taking a bath can suddenly become difficult. Yet through a nurse’s assessment, creativity, and support, many patients can bathe again. And that is something people truly appreciate.

Even for those living with dementia, the act of pouring warm water over someone can become a form of communication. It is much like holding a person’s hand. Words, meaning, and explanation may not be necessary, yet something is still conveyed.

Perhaps it is warmth.

Perhaps it is gentle movement.

The warmth and movement of another human being.

To me, that is caregiving in its purest form.

Play Practice

  1. Exercises
  2. Becoming familiar with the jo (wooden staff)
  3. The 25 Jo Kata
  4. Yokomen-uchi

Main Practice

  1. Aiki exercises
  2. Footwork
  3. Ukemi (falling techniques)
  4. Yokomen-uchi using the jo
  5. Yokomen-uchi Ikkyo Omote
  6. Yokomen-uchi Shiho-nage
  7. Yokomen-uchi Irimi-nage
  8. Yokomen-uchi Kote-gaeshi

Since it had been a while since we practiced yokomen-uchi, we took the opportunity to study the concept of the “rear tenkan” movement.

Understanding rear tenkan allows us to understand tenkan itself from a different perspective. In both movements, what matters most is the position of the center of gravity after the turn.

Control of one’s center and the ability to guide one’s partner are deeply connected.
