I have yet to find a cure for the feeling of “It’s too much trouble.”
I am a tremendous procrastinator myself, and before I knew it, I had reached this age while putting many things off.
Feelings such as liking or disliking something can often be overcome. But the feeling of “this is too much trouble” is far more mysterious.
My own theory is that its root lies in the pursuit of efficiency.
When something feels inefficient, we instinctively mutter, “What a hassle.”
Today, one of the younger students at practice told me, “Romance is too much trouble.”
I understand exactly what he meant.
And yet, hearing it made me feel a little sad.
Marriage is troublesome. Relationships are troublesome. Family is troublesome. If we’re honest, life itself is troublesome.
Because the things that matter most in life have very little to do with efficiency.
If we make efficiency our highest priority, life eventually reaches a dead end.
How to communicate this truth to children who have grown up in a world obsessed with efficiency—that is a significant challenge.

One reason I love Aikido is that it allows me to meet all kinds of people.
Had I never practiced Aikido, I doubt I would have encountered such a wide variety of individuals from different walks of life.
The longer I practice, the more I notice things.
Through physical contact, I can feel kindness, strength, patience, determination, and sometimes forcefulness.
These qualities transcend occupation, status, and social background.
There is a unique joy in sensing that someone is a kind person without being distracted by labels or categories.
Aikido allows us to encounter another side of human beings.
And that, too, is one of its greatest pleasures.
