There is a condition known as frozen shoulder. It is a common orthopedic problem that can affect almost anyone in their forties. The exact cause is not always clear, but when it comes, it comes. One of my talented fellow aikido practitioners is suffering from it now, and it feels as though it has already been more than six months. Anyone who has experienced it knows the truth: it does not heal quickly. It is a frustrating and often discouraging condition.
Breathing is essential in aikido. Just as we exhale deeply while stretching, we coordinate our breath with the opening and closing, expanding and contracting of the body. Through this process, ki seems to stretch and compress like a rubber band. Perhaps this is one reason why the aikido of experienced practitioners appears so soft and flexible.
Injury, however, disrupts this flow. It interferes with the body’s natural expansion and contraction, and pain disturbs the breath. When we know that our training partner is injured, it is important to choose another approach. Ideally, we should find ways to cultivate ki and continue training without causing unnecessary pain. In aikido, attacking an injury is completely counterproductive.

Breath and ki, breath and aikido—there is a profound connection between them. As we repeatedly practice coordinating breath with the body’s expansion, contraction, and twisting movements developed by those who came before us, something interesting begins to happen. Training sessions that once left us completely out of breath gradually become easier. The body changes. The breathing changes.
It is a subtle transformation, but a fascinating one.
