江田島道場

 ドイツ修行旅行まであと2週間弱、そろそろ準備を進め始めた。久しぶりの海外渡航であり、初めて使う航空会社、色々と心配事は尽きないが、自分が飛び込まなければ成長はない、これが私の信条なので、とにかく飛び込んでこようと思う。数日前に46歳になった。20代30代の自分は46歳の自分なんて想像したことがなかったがまさか46歳の日が来るなんて1mmも思っていなかった。なにか変わっているか、答えは半分NO半分YESだ。NOの部分は全く内面は成長していない気がする。YESの部分は身体は着実に老いているという事実だ。挑戦する気概がどんどん失せそうな事実ばかりが私を追い込むので、しっかり挑戦してこようと思う。死ぬまで挑戦していたい。そういう人間でありたい。

稽古生の皆さんには色々と知らないうちにできていることが増えている自分を褒めて欲しい。なかなか技を覚えた感覚もなく、どんどん昇級する道場ではないかもしれない。しかし確実に手捌き、足捌き、身体感覚は備わってきている。始めを思い出して欲しい。こんなに自然に後ろ受け身が出ただろうか。恐る恐る投げ合っていた初めのころがあった。どんな年齢からでも身体操作を正しく教えてくれる道場だと自負がある。まだまだ新しい世界がある。さらに上を目指してぜひ頑張って欲しいと思う。

It is now less than two weeks until my training trip to Germany, and I have finally begun preparing in earnest. It has been a long time since I last traveled abroad. I will be flying with an airline I have never used before, and of course there are countless small concerns. But I believe that without stepping forward into the unknown, there is no growth. That has always been my creed. So I intend to jump in.

A few days ago, I turned forty-six. In my twenties and thirties, I never once imagined myself at forty-six. Not even one millimeter of me believed that such a day would actually arrive. Has anything changed? The answer is half no, half yes.

The “no” is that internally, I do not feel that I have matured all that much. The “yes” is that my body is undeniably aging. The facts that press in on me are often those that seem to sap the spirit of challenge. That is precisely why I must continue to challenge myself. I want to keep challenging myself until the day I die. That is the kind of person I want to be.

To all the students: I want you to praise yourselves for the things you can now do without even realizing it. This may not be a dojo where techniques are memorized quickly or ranks are earned rapidly. But your hand movements, footwork, and bodily awareness are steadily developing.

Think back to the beginning. Could you perform a backward breakfall so naturally then? There was a time when you threw each other hesitantly, full of uncertainty. I take pride in the fact that this dojo teaches correct body mechanics, regardless of age.

There is still an entirely new world ahead. Aim higher. Continue striving.
