I heard someone talking about a local festival. I realized that I had some kind of prejudice in my mind. I had assumed that people who enjoy festivals were passionate festival lovers by nature and had been familiar with them since childhood. But that was not necessarily the case. I learned that people often build connections within their communities as adults and become involved in festivals through their own networks. It made me realize that it was fine to have my own way of connecting with festivals and the local community.
While I was listening to this story, I received a photo of my daughter enjoying a steak skewer and a kebab at the Danjiri Festival in Osaka. I guess everyone is enjoying themselves in their own way.

At the same time, I was also told about a custom of observing dietary restrictions on festival days. Apparently, a similar custom is practiced during pilgrimages to the Eighty-Eight Temples of Shikoku.
Shinto seems to have a relatively subtle religious presence, but faith is still there. Customs are passed down, and I think this is how they remain within communities and are carried on to the next generation.
I don’t know whether these customs should be preserved or whether they will simply continue to survive on their own. But they are part of our culture, something that has value beyond rationality or practicality. Still, I feel that it would be sad if they disappeared completely.
