In the morning, there was a light drizzle, but looking at the sky now, the stars of the night sky are approaching. Winter in Etajima brings winds, with northwest winds tossing up dry leaves as they pass by chillingly. The tatami mats are cold, and I find myself breaking into a sweat when I least expect it.
Now, for today’s training:
- Aikido warm-up exercises
- Footwork
- Ukemi (receiving techniques)
- Turning movements
- Aihamni Katatedori Ikyo Omote (Front wrist grab, First teaching, Omote)
- Aihamni Katatedori Maki Iriminage (Front wrist grab, Wrapping entry throw)
- Breathing exercises
Today, we focused on the footwork and power of turning movements in Aihamni Katatedori Ikyo Omote. We utilized the power of footwork and the movements of the first teaching. It’s crucial not to shift the center of gravity backward, so we practiced turning with a forward center of gravity and incorporated this into partner exercises. The key is for the partner to continually attack the center. By continuously pressuring the opponent, you can create openings. Finally, we practiced breathing exercises. Similar to other techniques, we used the power of receiving to control the opponent and practiced how to continually pressure and control the opponent. Gradually, little by little, we practice how to be for the sake of the partner, enhancing ourselves in the process.
