I have loved Ben E. King’s Stand by Me for as long as I can remember. I bought the CD and listened to it over and over again. At the time, I did not understand what made its chord progression or melody so special. I simply knew that I loved it. I tried to imitate it, but I could never sing it the way he did.

Only later, after studying music a little more seriously, did I begin to understand. Behind that song lies extraordinary rhythmic precision, impeccable control of pitch, and a depth of soul woven into every phrase. It is a masterpiece built on both artistry and technique.

It has been many years since music occupied such a large place in my life, yet I still find myself humming that melody from time to time. And somewhere inside, I still wish I could sing it the way Ben E. King did.

Today, I received news that an acquaintance had passed away. The call came from his wife.

He was a man who cared deeply for his family. I can still picture his smile. Thinking of the grief his wife and children must now be carrying fills me with sadness.

One moment a person is here, and the next they are gone.

And only then do we fully realize how much they meant to those around them, how much of their quiet greatness we took for granted.

My heartfelt condolences go out to his family and loved ones.

Today I found myself reflecting on the difference between lightness and heaviness.

My understanding of these qualities has been changing. In the past, I felt heavy on the outside but light within. Little by little, however, I am beginning to discover a different state: light on the outside, yet heavy within.

That is how my shihan feels when I receive his technique.

Not heavy yet somehow light, but light while possessing an unmistakable depth and weight.

It is difficult to describe. There is no unnecessary tension, no obvious force, yet there is a presence that cannot be moved. A quiet substance hidden beneath a relaxed exterior.

Perhaps that is one of the lessons I am now trying to learn.

To become lighter without becoming empty.

To become softer without becoming weak.

To carry weight where it matters, and nowhere else.
