Only four days remain. Training is entering its final stage as the promotion examination approaches. The more I practice, the more it sometimes feels as though I understand less rather than more. When I become anxious or tense, the techniques stop working. The essence of technique is to control the partner, to guide them, to connect with them, and ultimately to become one with the movement. That is something I must not forget.

Play practice

  1. Warm-up exercises
  2. Becoming familiar with the jo
  3. Gyaku-hanmi loop movement

  1. Aiki warm-up exercises
  2. Footwork
  3. Ukemi (breakfalls)
  4. Gyaku-hanmi katate-dori genkei kokyu-nage stretch
  5. Gyaku-hanmi katate-dori shiho-nage ura
  6. Gyaku-hanmi katate-dori yoko-kuzushi kokyu-nage
  7. Shomen-uchi shiho-nage omote

I still do not know how to convey the appeal of something that can only be understood through direct experience. In the end, there is nothing to do but practice. Those who understand it will understand it; there is no better way to explain it.

Perhaps Aikido is not particularly fashionable in this age. It is simply a matter of doing it. Practicing, again and again, for its own sake.

And if I am honest, I do not practice Aikido for anyone else. I practice it for myself. My Aikido is, in many ways, an expression of self-interest. Yet I think that is perfectly acceptable. In fact, it may be the most honest reason to continue. If practice enriches one’s own life, deepens one’s understanding, and brings a sense of fulfillment, then that alone is reason enough to keep walking the path.
