すっかり涼しくなってきた。日中に激しい雨が降り、温度があまり上がらなかったというのもあるだろう。しかし季節の移り変わりは思ったよりも早い。しかし我々がこの涼しく感じる1ヶ月以上前から鈴虫は鳴き始めているわけだから、何を根拠に秋の虫は季節を知るのか、生き物には計り知れない能力が秘められていると感じる。我々もひょっとしたら、外からの情報に踊らされず、自分の感覚を研ぎ澄ませることができれば、いろいろな予知ができたりするのではとも思う。しかし成人した日に試したギャンブルも気まぐれで現実逃避のチケットとして買う宝くじも全く当選に無縁な私にはそんな能力を感じないわけだが。

難しい正面打ちもやらなければ上達しない。気合わせ正面打ちでもいい、とにかく相手の振り上げの動作に反応して動く癖を少しずつつけていくことが大切だと思う。「振り合い」だ。困るのは力みだ。受けも取りも正面を打つときに力みが出てしまう。力まずにしかし相手を切る正面打ちを会得したい。
The weather has turned noticeably cooler. Today’s heavy daytime rain probably kept the temperature from rising much, but the change of seasons feels quicker than expected. Yet, even more than a month ago, the bell crickets had already begun to sing. What allows these insects to know the season so precisely? It makes me feel that living creatures possess mysterious, immeasurable abilities. Perhaps we too, if we sharpened our senses without being swayed by outside information, could perceive and even foresee more than we imagine. Still, given my complete lack of success with the gamble I tried on the day I became an adult, and the lottery tickets I occasionally buy as nothing more than a small escape from reality, I don’t feel such abilities in myself.

Shomen-uchi is a difficult attack to handle, but without practice there is no progress. Even if it begins simply with “matching strikes,” the important thing is to develop the habit of responding to your partner’s movement as they raise their arm. This is the essence of “furi-ai”—meeting each other’s motion. The challenge, however, is tension. Both uke and tori often stiffen as they perform shomen-uchi. The goal is to strike decisively yet without strain. To learn a relaxed but cutting shomen-uchi—that is what I want to achieve.
