The cold has returned. Compared to last week, the heater felt far less effective, and the tatami remained cold no matter how much time passed. Today, we had a family come to observe practice. They looked so happy together—it was heartwarming to see.
But what a careless and selfish concept happiness can be. People often label others as “happy” or “unfortunate” without knowing the struggles they endure to protect their families. Happiness and misfortune are not things that can be determined by outsiders, and yet, people impose such judgments without hesitation. Still, I can’t help but hope—if a family stays healthy, continues to love and support one another, and keeps their spirits strong, then surely, that is a form of happiness.

It has been a while since we practiced gyaku-hanmi katate-dori techniques. Many of the techniques we worked on today were featured in last year’s embukai (demonstration event), so everyone seemed extra mindful of the finer details during practice.
With this lingering cold, it can be tough to stay motivated and make the effort to attend practice. But seeing everyone push through and continue training is truly inspiring. Budo (martial arts) is about refining technique, body, and spirit—and I can see that everyone is steadily honing themselves in all three aspects. It’s truly impressive!
