We have been having a series of days that are a little more comfortable, giving off a sense of autumn fragrance. The mornings and evenings are getting colder, so I hesitate to put away the thicker blankets just yet.

Now, let’s go over today’s practice:

  1. Aikido warm-up exercises
  2. Side ukemi (falling to the side)
  3. Back ukemi (falling backward)
  4. Front ukemi (falling forward)
  5. Ikkyo movements (basic technique)
  6. Ai hanmi katate-dori (cross-hand grab) ikkyo omote (first teaching)
  7. Ki testing against shomenuchi (front strike)
  8. Ai hanmi katate-dori (cross-hand grab) kotegaeshi – explanation of ki-musubi (unification of energy)
  9. Sitting techniques and breathing exercises

We had some participants who were relatively new, so we took a bit more time for explanations. However, we are fortunate to have members who have been training with us for nearly two months, which makes conveying the true meaning to them smoother, and I am grateful for that. People grow within a community. I believe that learning through being part of what everyone is doing, rather than receiving one-on-one explanations, is more effective. Just giving it a try is also one approach.

All techniques are based on maintaining an appropriate distance from the partner, and no matter how we explain the ma-ai (combative distance) in words, it is difficult to understand until one grasps it for oneself. I can sense that those who have been training for about two months are starting to understand it through their bodies.

When we examine it closely, the reasons for that particular ma-ai and positioning are supported by the principles of the sword and staff. Compared to other dojos, In the our central Dojo ,International Aikido Dojo Hiroshima ,they uses the sword and staff quite extensively. As there is a risk of injury when using the sword and staff, I will cautiously incorporate and explain their usage little by little during our training sessions.
