On Wednesday nights, Etajimacho has a lively atmosphere that makes it seem like it’s not even Etajima. Nonetheless, it still feels like a warm and embracing place, giving off the feeling of a deep and comforting island. On this day, there was practice at the Etajima City Martial Arts Hall. The contents of the practice were:

  1. Aikido exercises
  2. Back falls
  3. Front falls
  4. Sliding footwork training
  5. Body transitions (practiced alone and practiced with a partner in reverse half-body single-hand grasping)
  6. Single-hand grasp (reverse half-body single-hand grasping) shihonage omote
  7. Turning footwork (in response to lateral strikes)
  8. Lateral strikes shihonage omote

I tried lateral strikes for the first time in striking techniques. When watching an Aikido demonstration, techniques like back-hand grasping or lateral strikes have easily understood circular movements and look very beautiful. Throwing a partner with a single-hand four-corner throw, moving one step at a time in what seems like a somewhat rigid practice, while matching the partner’s attack and maneuvering one’s legs, also looks beautiful with circular movements when done smoothly in lateral strikes. It’s not easy to do right away, but I think the sensation of gradually getting used to it is enjoyable. Although Aikido has many techniques, the important thing is to feel that with proper footwork, one can control their own axis and center of gravity, and can cleverly take control of their partner’s center of gravity with minimal force, moving with great force. That’s why we’re learning the proper footwork. Aikido is so much fun.
