江田島にも雪が積もった。気候変動がしきりに叫ばれる昨今で気づくことは、温暖化は温暖になるだけの問題ではなかったということ。温暖化に伴って起きる気候が厳しく自然災害を引き連れてくることを気付かされる。だからいつどう防げたか、一つの考えも浮かばない。先週の選挙の話ではないが、自分が寄与している感覚が低いことが、行動変容のモチベーションを下げている。技術は進化したはずなのに温暖化は全く止めることができなかったということだ。こんなふうに考えると科学技術、文化はすごく進化しているはずなのに、結局人間は進化していない。結局、自己利益のためにしかモチベーションを保てないし、現象変化への寄与を感じられないことへの行動は起こしにくい。逆にいうと、進化するべきは技術でなく、人間なのかもしれない。技術の進化を一旦置いといて、他者理解の深さや、想定他者のリアリティと高めたり、利己主義から脱する人間自身の進化を考える時代にきているのか。いや、それは永遠の課題なのか。

通例は祝日は稽古を休みにするせいか、今日は2人のみ参加の稽古だった。その二人はどんな気持ちできてくださったのだろう、せっかくの休日に、外出するのも面倒だったり、予定があったりしただろう。それでも参加してくださったことがありがたい。

In these times when climate change is constantly discussed, one realization stands out: global warming was never simply about things getting warmer. It brings harsher climate patterns and carries natural disasters in its wake. When I think about it, I cannot even come up with a single clear idea of when or how it could have been prevented.
This is not unlike what I wrote about last week’s election. When we feel that our personal contribution is minimal, our motivation to change our behavior declines. Technology was supposed to have advanced, and yet we have been unable to stop global warming at all. Thinking about it this way, although science, technology, and culture have undoubtedly progressed, perhaps humanity itself has not evolved much.
In the end, we seem able to sustain motivation only for our own self-interest. It is difficult to act when we cannot feel that we are contributing to change. If that is true, then perhaps what needs to evolve is not technology, but human beings. Maybe we have reached an era in which, instead of further accelerating technological development, we must deepen our understanding of others, heighten the reality of those beyond ourselves, and consider how to evolve as humans who can transcend egoism. Or perhaps that has always been humanity’s eternal challenge.

Because holidays are usually days off from practice, today only two people attended. I wonder what they were feeling when they decided to come. On a precious holiday, it might have been troublesome to go out, or they may have had other plans. Even so, they chose to participate. For that, I am deeply grateful.
