Do you all know about the practice called ‘Sennichi Kaiho Gyō’? It’s a form of pilgrimage where you visit and pay respects at various peaks on Mount Hiei. What’s astonishing about it is the duration and distance involved. It spans seven years, with the first year consisting of a 100-day, 30-kilometer pilgrimage. By the third year, it extends to 200 days, and the distance covered reaches up to 84 kilometers in the sixth year. During this pilgrimage, there are nine days of fasting, abstaining from water, staying awake, and reciting sutras. It’s truly a life-threatening practice.
So, what do they gain from this ordeal? By repeatedly paying respects to things they would typically ignore, they come to feel that they are living and being sustained by their connection to all things. It’s an arduous journey. While it may not be common for most people to come close to reaching the level achieved by these highly respected monks, it’s still a goal to become a person who can sincerely express gratitude, even if it’s just a little bit.
Now, let’s talk about the day’s training:
Playful Practice:
- Warm-up exercises (Yang, Yin, A-un breathing)
- Slow wrist exercises
- Bear walk, spider walk
- Knee walking
- Footwork (pivot)
- Ai hanmi katate dori Breath throw (Review)
- Ai hanmi katate dori Shihonage Omote and Ura (Review)
Main Practice:
- Aikido warm-up exercises
- Footwork (forward pivot step, backward pivot step, pivot turn)
- Body movements and transitions
- Ukemi (back breakfall, forward breakfall)
- Ai hanmi katate dori Breath throw
- Ai hanmi katate dori ikkyo (starting from pivot turn)
- Entering throw and body movements
- Ai hanmi katate dori entering throw
- Gyaku hanmi katate dori entering throw
We had a girl who had been absent for about two weeks join the playful practice, so we reviewed what she had learned, and it was impressive to see that she had remembered everything and even improved on it. I wonder what goes on in a child’s brain. Despite my desire to improve and cramming something new every day, I can’t evolve as quickly as a child’s brain, which absorbs knowledge like a sponge you see in American product commercials. It’s enviable.
Furthermore, those who achieved the Gokyu (5th Kyu) and Rokkyu (6th Kyu) ranks have begun practicing for the next stage. We are now exploring the techniques we learned in Aihanmi Katatedori, but this time, in Gyakuhanmi (opposite stance). They quickly grasped the concepts, thanks to their rigorous preparation for the promotion exams. It once again highlighted how demonstrations and promotion exams serve as valuable milestones in our journey.
