Today, I had the opportunity to participate in a practical class for university students at Hiroshima University, which was conducted by Sensei Werner, who is currently teaching there. The class was designed to provide students who may not have prior experience with Aikido a clear explanation of the principles and foundations of Aikido, followed by a hands-on experience. This was the second practical session for these students.
Observing the students perform Aikido techniques with elements such as blending and unbalancing characteristic of Aikido was a reminder of the importance of teaching principles like “Ki” and “Harmony.” The entire class was conducted in English, and while I may not have fully understood half of what the instructor said, I found it extremely interesting. Engaging in communication in English with the students was enjoyable, and I had a fulfilling time.
If our schedules align, I look forward to participating again in the future. Now, let me share the details of today’s training.
Training for the day included:
Playful Exercises:
- Warm-up exercises
- Explanation of wrist strengthening exercises
- Explanation of Tokage walk (resembling a bear’s movement, as mentioned by Sensei Werner)
Main Training:
- Aikido warm-up exercises
- Footwork (forward entry, rear entry, turning)
- Body movements (entry and turning)
- Ukemi (rear fall, forward roll)
- Body transitions
- Transition and unbalancing techniques
- Direction of sideways unbalancing and ukemi practice
- Reverse half-body single-handed sideways unbalancing, breath throw
- Reverse half-body single-handed rotating throw stretch
- Reverse half-body single-handed rotating throw (utilizing transition and unbalancing)
- Cool-down stretches
During the session, we were inspired by Sensei Werner’s guidance during the promotion tests. He explained that when executing complex techniques, one can break down the technique into segments, and once that part is mastered, continue with the full technique. This led us to practice the transition in receiving techniques for reverse half-body single-handed techniques, combining it with the technique for slow and controlled unbalancing. In the end, we executed the final form of the sideways unbalancing breath throw. Since many participants were not accustomed to ukemi, we ensured that they could safely fall to the mat by sitting down. Additionally, we practiced the stretch for the reverse half-body single-handed rotating throw, both in the front and back. Deconstructing and reconstructing the movements required balance and relaxation, making the practice highly enjoyable.
