The autumn wind feels refreshing. The sky is filled with scales of cloud, like uneven bumps, and after a few days it turns into forecasts of rain. Repeating this cycle, before we realize it, winter arrives, and soon it will be the season when we instinctively seek warmth. The poets of old who enjoyed the elegance of the seasons were true masters at capturing the moment as it was. I believe such appreciation comes from having space in the heart.

Having “room in the heart” is essential in aikidō. Entering (irimi) with poor posture that breaks your balance is meaningless. The same is true when stepping into ma-ai in order to deal with your partner. We must always move with our center stable and weight balanced, ready for the next posture. But this is only possible when the heart has space. I now better understand what the sensei always says: practice at sixty percent, and gradually expand that sixty percent as you grow.
