I like octopus. The Senshu region where I used to live is famous for octopus, and from the rainy season, octopus begins to be caught, growing bigger day by day. Octopus is delicious. The happiness of chewing on its tightly packed, flavorful flesh is hard to put into words. Also, apparently, octopuses are intelligent. They seem to have a high level of intelligence, so much so that during World Cup and Olympic years, TV broadcasts feature predictions using octopuses to try to tap into that ability. As a result, I also like takoyaki. I remember feeling excited when I was 18 and went to Kansai, where there are many uniquely characterized takoyaki shops in the neighborhood. It’s a story about how I like octopus.

Practices

  1. Aikido gymnastics
  2. Footwork control
  3. Ukemi (breakfalls)
  4. Kote-gaeshi (small joint throw) Sankyo stretch
  5. Reverse half-body, Shomenuchi (front strike), Yoko-nage (side throw)
  6. Reverse half-body, Genten (air) throw, two types of breathing throws
  7. Shoulder grip, two-way, sankyo (a technique)
  8. Reverse half-body, outside rotation throw
  9. Both-hands, Uchi-mawari nage (inner spiral throw), back variation

Training is about communication. It’s necessary to give guidance tailored to the level of each participant. I think it’s not good to talk too much or to overly show demonstrations. When I review my own practice on video, I realize I often explain too much or too little, and my demonstration is sometimes sloppy—there are still many immature aspects. Also, I believe completely different guidance is necessary in Saijo and Etajima. I can truly appreciate the skill of the instructors.
