While reading a book by Master Tada, I came across a mention of Mr. Tempū Nakamura, which led me to do a little research. He was a figure who developed his own theory on the relationship between the mind and the body and influenced many prominent people across various fields. His teachings have been passed down through a foundation called the Tempukai, which continues to spread his philosophy today.

After looking him up, videos related to him started appearing in my recommendations. Among them was a video of his quotes, and one of them said:
“Start with thank you.”
It was such a simple, obvious kind of quote—but for some reason, it really resonated with me.

Until now, I had always believed that you need a reason to say “thank you.”
“Thank you for doing this.”
“Thank you for being like that.”
I thought that unless I understood the situation—what had happened in the world—I had no right to say thank you. I believed I had to know, as much as possible. But Mr. Tempū taught me something different. That we can begin with “thank you.” That it’s okay to start from there. That was enough for me to feel a bit lighter.

Indeed, everything is “thank you.”
I don’t fully understand everything.
I don’t know everything that has happened.
But even so—everything is thank you.
And that is enough.

Today, I shared this story before our training.
I wanted to say it for a particular young person.
I believe that what we should convey to adults and what we should convey to children are different.

Since a couple of weeks ago, I’ve been telling the children to try and complete the entire warm-up from start to finish with patience. Each of them has a different challenge. Sometimes, simply beginning with the warm-up is the most important and essential part.

Play Training

  1. Warm-up exercises
  2. Bear walk, spider walk
  3. Knee-walking (shikkō)
  4. Getting used to the staff
  5. Gyaku-hanmi katate-dori sotomawari-nage (staff hand guidance)

Main Training

  1. Aiki warm-up exercises
  2. Footwork
  3. Ukemi (falling techniques)
  4. Tenkan method (turning movement)
  5. Gyaku-hanmi katate-dori kokyū-nage (with small footwork)
  6. Shoulder grab nikyō (front and back variations)
  7. Shoulder grab sankyō (front and back variations)
  8. Gyaku-hanmi katate-dori irimi-nage
  9. Gyaku-hanmi katate-dori sotomawari-nage (ura)
  10. Gyaku-hanmi katate-dori mae-otoshi kokyū-nage

Shoulder grabs are based on the same movement as gyaku-hanmi katate-dori. Since there are members preparing for their 3rd kyu, I tried combining both to deepen their understanding. However, the rhythm and maai (distance/timing) change between them, so I’d like to repeat the practice many times. Correct ukemi is also key to this. I’ll continue to teach and repeat the movements of ukemi as well.
