稽古レポート

 悟りとはなんだろうか。いや、これは別に悟りたいとかではなく、よく言う悟りという境地に行かれる人がおられるなら知ってみたいと少し思うだけで、自分がそうなれるなんて思っていない。でも、少し想像するなら、それはきっと、世の中のいろんなことを真の意味でいろんな観点から見られると言うことではないかと思う。禅語の中には、物事の変え方、人間の支配のし方、環境の変え方なんて一つも教えとして入っていない。むしろ、自分の変え方、考え方の変え方、観点の変え方ばかりが並んでいるようだ。そう、観点を変えれば、実は物事は変わると言うことなんだろう。それを自在に操る人がさとるのかと「観自在菩薩」という仏の名前を見て思った。

 何度も何度も繰り返し、少しずつ、修正を加えて伝えていきたいことをいろんな言葉で伝えていく。私も成長させてもらっていて、力足らずで申し訳ない気持ちもいっぱいだ。しかし、転ばないためには、自転車は前に漕ぐしかない。その通りだ。


What Is Enlightenment?

What is enlightenment, I wonder?

No, it’s not that I seek to attain enlightenment myself. But if there are people who have truly reached that state we often call “satori,” I simply find myself curious to understand what it means. It’s not something I imagine I could ever achieve.

Still, if I try to imagine it just a little, perhaps it means being able to view the world from multiple angles—seeing things as they truly are, from many perspectives.

In Zen teachings, you won’t find instructions on how to change external things—how to change others, how to control people, or how to reshape the environment.
Instead, they speak only of how to change oneself: how to shift your thinking, how to shift your viewpoint.
In other words, maybe by changing your perspective, the very things you’re looking at begin to change.
I came across the name of a bodhisattva recently—Kanzeon Bosatsu (Avalokiteśvara), sometimes translated as the one who perceives the world with freedom.
It struck me then—perhaps enlightenment lies in that: the ability to freely shift perspective, to see with true clarity.

Again and again, I try to convey what I wish to teach, making slight adjustments each time, expressing it in various words.
I am also growing through this process, and I often feel sorry that I’m still not strong enough, still lacking in many ways.
But, as they say, to avoid falling off a bicycle, you have to keep pedaling forward.
And yes—it’s exactly that.
