There is a temperature difference between morning and evening, and during the day, it’s a season where you need to be careful not to get sick. Is it the prelude to the rainy season? In the drizzly rain, everyone participated and we were able to have a lively practice. We have challenges that we must work on for promotion, and the content of the practice is gradually becoming more serious.

This time we practiced:

  1. Aikido exercises
  2. Side breakfalls
  3. Back breakfalls (including rotation practice)
  4. Front breakfalls
  5. Sliding footwork training
  6. Footwork transitions
  7. Half-side one-handed grab entering throw
  8. Half-side one-handed grab: one exercise from the omote and ura variations
  9. Reverse half-side one-handed grab: all-direction throw
  10. Breath control exercises

Perhaps we put too much effort into the training, but I felt that I was the one who was the most out of breath. We made sure to replenish our fluids as needed, so I hope everyone was okay. Thanks to everyone’s sincere efforts in practicing breakfalls every time, we are steadily improving. Let’s keep working hard to do it safely. However, even with just one breakfall, there are many things to keep in mind, such as properly opening the hips, the direction of the feet, and where to look. It’s a very deep technique, so I’m practicing it along with everyone else.

We tried the iriminage throw, which is considered a basic technique in Aikido, for the first time. First, we confirmed the movements of the feet and hands one by one, and then because the movement for the receiver is complex and requires getting used to, I did it first and then everyone else tried it once they got a little more accustomed to it. It’s a good time to introduce this technique since we’re slowly getting used to interacting with people again. I plan to incorporate this technique into our practice as much as possible and get used to the movements.

Finally, we did breath control exercises, including the kokyūage (breathing method), which is also a training for developing breath control. It involves a unique movement of the whole body that simulates swinging a sword or staff and controlling your opponent. It’s one of the important elements of Aikido, so we will gradually incorporate this training as well. Since it’s a movement that’s difficult to explain with words, I will continue to think about how to convey it and come up with various ideas.
