Today, I presented certificates to two members who earned their 3rd kyu. It has been about two and a half years of steady training for them. I imagine it was not an easy path.

I find myself wondering what this 3rd kyu means to each of them.

In Aikido, the meaning of a promotion is something each person ultimately decides for themselves. Was it a rank earned through struggle? Through persistence? Through personal commitment? What we learn, in the end, is that what matters is not the number of the rank, but how proud one can be of having attained it. The value of that rank depends entirely on oneself.

Perhaps that reflects the essence of value in the world at large. Whether material possessions, quantity, ability, or talent—there will always be comparisons of more or less. But the essence of value lies in how much pride one can take in it. Of course, this is only one way of thinking.

We had not practiced much from ai-hanmi katate-dori recently, so since Wednesday we have returned to it. Although ai-hanmi places both partners in the same stance, it still involves facing one another directly, and many of its fundamentals connect to techniques such as shomen-uchi. It is a very instructive foundational form for understanding technique and ma-ai (distance and timing).
